Different Drummer Workshop, founded in 1973 by Frank Ridley, has built its reputation on creating handmade wooden toys that are simple, safe, and incredibly durable. They eschew flashy electronics and complex designs in favor of classic forms that encourage imaginative play and stand the test of time. Their philosophy centers on the idea that toys should be built to last, to be passed down through generations, becoming part of a family's history. This commitment to quality and tradition sets them apart, making them more than just a toy manufacturer – they are preservers of a valued craft and creators of potential family legacies, as evidenced by the heartwarming stories from their loyal customers.

The Different Drummer Workshop is nestled at 211 Eaton Hill Rd, Solon, ME 04979, USA. Solon is a picturesque town in Somerset County, known for its scenic beauty and quiet charm, providing a fitting backdrop for a business focused on traditional craftsmanship. While it might be a bit off the beaten path for some, its location offers a peaceful and inviting atmosphere that enhances the experience of visiting a workshop dedicated to handcrafted items.

For those traveling by car, accessing the workshop requires navigating rural roads, which are generally well-maintained. The journey itself can be part of the appeal, offering scenic views characteristic of central Maine. Ample parking is available directly at the workshop, ensuring a convenient visit. My husband and I found Different Drummer in 1973 while enroute home to Pennsylvania from Canada on our honeymoon. We returned to Different Drummer in the fall of 1975 to buy a cradle from them for our impending first child. The owners welcomed us warmly, with tea and graciousness. Since then, the cradle has been the first home for our two children, and numerous great-nieces and nephews. We have just now readied the cradle for our first grandchild who is one week old today. The cradle and all the babies who have slept in it are well and happy..... and the cradle lives on, with the list of the babies and birth dates attached to the bottom. It's never too late to start family traditions!
